Hidden Value at Home: Turn Old Brass and Copper into Cash

Brass and copper are the most valuable things in your kabaad pile, and also the most likely to be given away at the wrong price.

Almost every Indian home has some. The heavy brass thali set that comes out once a year. Dadi's copper water vessel that stopped being used when everyone switched to the RO. A dented lota, an old degchi, the showpiece elephant on the shelf. Copper-lined teapots, brass diyas, temple bells. And then the fittings nobody thinks about solid brass doorknobs, old locks, hinges, latches and light fixtures from a house that was built before everything switched to steel and plastic.

Where Brass and Copper Hide Around Your Home

Start with the kitchen and storeroom. Older Indian households often have brass utensils, copper vessels, traditional water pots, copper lined teapots, serving items and decorative showpieces that have not been used for years.

You may also find brass in unexpected places around the house. Older doorknobs, locks, hinges, handles, taps and light fixtures may contain brass, although some modern items are only brass-plated and should be checked before being treated as brass scrap.

Pooja items, old decorative pieces and traditional household vessels can also contain brass or copper. If an item is still usable, antique or valuable as a showpiece, consider resale or reuse first. If it is broken, damaged or no longer useful, recycling may be the better option.

What Is Your Brass and Copper Scrap Worth?

Brass and copper are usually worth significantly more per kilogram than common household scrap such as cardboard or plastic.

  • Brass - ₹325/kg
  • Copper - ₹505/kg

Even a few kilograms of unused brass or copper lying around the house can therefore have meaningful scrap value.

Should You Sell It or Keep It?

Worth pausing on, because this category is different from plastic or raddi.

Some brass and copper items are worth more as objects than as metal. Genuinely old temple pieces, hand-worked urlis, engraved vessels and antique fittings can have collector or resale value well above their scrap rate. If a piece is intact, well-made and clearly old, get it looked at before it goes on the weighing scale.

But dented, cracked, leaking, blackened beyond cleaning, or missing parts — that's scrap, and it's good scrap. A broken brass vessel doesn't become useful again by sitting in a cupboard for another five years.
